Prologue

Robotics is one of the most fascinating - areas of research and study for electronics , communications and computer engineers around the world. The past several years has seen the boom of self controlling robots , remotely controllable ones and intelligent machines with self replicating "robotic DNA". Such devices are already being used in interplanetary missions, in deep sea exploration and in the depths of volcanoes and mines.

The Mars Pathfinder mission, which landed a space vehicle on the surface of Mars, is still fresh in our minds. The mission as we looked at it, mainly centred around the ability of a small vehicle known as the "rover", which roamed on the surface of Mars to study and collect planetary data.

All these factors, coupled with the fact that the IEEE conducts hardware project competitions every year on an all-Bombay basis; we the IEEE members of VESIT decided to go ahead with a rather ambitious endeavour - a project to make an intelligent collission avoidance system.

This project has given us students an in depth and practical knowledge of concepts which other wise would have remained just as theory in our minds. It also gave us a thorough understanding of various components which we study in our syllabus and has taught us a lot about teamwork. Lastly and most importantly, it brought out the creative spirit among us. Several parts of the rover, as we named it, had to be tailor designed by us as components available abroad could not be found in India especially with regards the handyboard components and the motors.

Thus, this project has turned out to be real eye opener for all of us.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Branch Counsellor, Prof J.A. Gokhale, and our various sponsors, without whose financial help, the never would never have been possible.
